What will you do?

To provide expert legal support to the Institutional Investment Product teams and assist with general legal tasks in the wider business as and when required.

The incumbent will provide legal advice, including drafting or vetting of contracts, related to –

  • the investment and annuity products offered to retirement funds and corporate clients 
  • investment contracts and guidelines between Sanlam Life, asset managers, and clients
  • regulatory and compliance changes impacting the business and our stakeholders

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting and reviewing legal agreements applicable to the different business units described above.
  • Advising on the impact of legislation applicable to the different business units and their clients.
  • Providing advice on legal matters and drafting legal opinions.
  • Legal risk management reporting.
  • Presentations on various legal topics and developments to the different business units.
  • Conducting legal analysis and researching legal matters relating to new products.
  • Providing expert legal input for new product development.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal agreements including policy contracts, investment guidelines, and mandates.
  • Advising on all legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to the take-on of new clients and new products.
  • Assist with general legal tasks in the wider business as and when required.
  • Identify new amendments to investment legislation that impacts the business and advise and assist with implementation.
  • Conducting legal research and providing practical and operational legal advice to the business on a wide range of issues that affect or may affect the business.
  • Main liaison with wider Sanlam Group Legal teams. 

Qualification and Experience

  • LLB degree, preference is given to individuals with excellent academic results.
  • 2-6 years experience. 
  • Previous experience in investment, pension, and insurance law is preferred. 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent drafting experience
  • Ability to interpret legislation and make recommendations considering business requirements
  • Good knowledge and understanding of South African law – basic knowledge of the financial services industry and the Pension Funds Act, Insurance Act, and FAIS Act will be advantageous
  • Computer literate with proven proficiency in MS Office (Word and Powerpoint)
  • A fair knowledge of all legislation affecting investment management firms, including the Insurance Act, Pension Funds Act, Collective Investment Schemes Control Act, Exchange Control Regulations, and others.
