Job Description

EC2 Accelerated Nitro is looking for a seasoned Senior Manager of Software Development Engineering to help us lead and grow one of the critical spaces in EC2 and its virtualization technology.

This is a new role for a manager of managers with a unique opportunity to lead multiple engineering initiatives, becoming a single-threaded leader in a very important space of the EC2 Nitro Hypervisor.

You will be working closely together with the EC2 Product Team, focusing on exciting new technology, interesting challenges, and driving real worldwide impact.

In this role, you will create the vision for your team, develop your team, make important time investments in hiring, and define the technological roadmap by partnering up with Principal Engineers and Product Managers.

This position requires technical background in operating systems, software development, and systems development, with detailed planning, operational excellence, operational management, and effective written and verbal communication skills, adapting to the different levels of audiences in the company.

EC2 Accelerated Nitro is an organization that powers the EC2 Nitro instance families, focusing on hypervisors, virtualization, and accelerated computing. We build highly operable quiescent hypervisors that provide near-bare metal performance to EC2 instances.

We also integrate hardware accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, etc.) into the EC2 instance families to support advanced workloads, such as machine learning, high-performance computing, inference, or graphics processing.

Responsibility:

  • Build, manage and develop an engineering organization that works in virtualization technologies in EC2, including hiring, retention, performance management, mentoring, and capability/skill development.
  • Evaluate complex business and technical requirements, and communicate inherent risks and solutions to technical and non-technical business owners.
  • Create a vision for your team, planning focused on timely delivery, driving operational activities, and on-call rotation for your team.
  • Influence other teams and leaders outside your organization, work hand-in-hand with Principal Engineers, diving deep into technical areas as needed, and coordinate with other teams working in the same space spread across the world.

A day in the life

As a Senior Manager of Software Development Engineering, you invest time in hiring the appropriate talent to make your team more effective at delivering new functionality that delights your customers.

You operate the software of your team in production, anticipating problems, learning from mistakes, and ensuring customer workloads run without disruption.

You drive the roadmap of your team and create a long-term vision. You work with other seasoned managers in the EC2 Accelerated Nitro organization joining efforts to strengthen engineering experience and make the organization more effective as a whole.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of people management experience, leading high-performance teams, and managing other managers.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience building and maintaining software or online services.
  • Able to work with a diverse team, with demonstrable experience hiring and developing others.
  • Proven ability to dive deep into software and systems architecture.
  • Comfortable using the typical Linux/UNIX utility toolbox.
  • Excellent English in written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of operating systems.
  • Systems engineering experience.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Demonstrable experience handling critical problems and developing agile techniques.
